3 Quick Tips For Reducing Plastic In Your Life

When I had my son I was on a mission to cut plastic out of my life. My efforts were valiant, but I soon became overwhelmed when everywhere I turned every item put in and on our bodies traveled in plastic. Cereal in plastic in the box, canned food liners, frozen food items, fruit in plastic containers, milk in plastic, cheese in plastic, personal care products in plastic… yikes, there was no escape! Instead of resorting to my often defeating all or nothing approach, I decided I can still work at reduction vs. total elimination. Whether some of us like to discuss it or not, we as humans expose ourselves to toxins around the clock, so any bit of reduction to help ourselves and the planet is a win. Here are my favorite every day quick tips you can make happen today:

1- Replace Plastic Wrap With Bees Wax Food Wrap– This is one item that often goes overlooked when used in daily life. Despite by best efforts, I can’t seem to keep my glass containers & lids matched up. I love having the option of using this plastic substitute & am amazed at how well it works. The wraps can be used over & over cutting down on your use of plastic. Bonus, they can be used in the freezer as well.

2- Replace Your Disposable Plastic Baggies- Until I became a mom, my use of plastic baggies was reasonable I would say, but since becoming a mom, they were flying out of my kitchen at an alarming rate. Glass can be heavy, bulky & easily broken by a little one. The perfect substitute is reusable silicon food pouches. They seal well, can be used in the freezer, & are perfect for a light, on the go food container. Both these items I found on Amazon.

3- Ditch The Liquid Soap- This may not be the popular choice for some of you, however, in our germ obsessed world, there has been an overuse of anti-bacterial items which are not shown to be a big help to us. Liquid soap is one such product. I recommend going back to the old-fashioned bar of soap which will not only cut back on your plastic use, but will help your wallet as well. There are wonderful, affordable & natural bars of soap to be found at places like a local farmer’s market or at Whole Foods. A friend of mine has a fabulous soap you can find at The Luxury Republic. My son and I each have our own bar of soap for the shower, and our bathrooms and kitchen have soap as well. As always, check the label because many products advertised as “natural”, indeed are not.
